GA16DE WATCHOUTS
This account is compiled from my experience of having owned two B14s. The first one is a manual 1996 Sentra and the second, an automatic facelift model which I presently own. Both are powered by the same GA16DEengine.
1) The tension pulley is located right at the bottom of the engine and is subject to water exposure especially in the Malaysian rainy weather. Make sure the bearing cover is intact otherwise the bearing life will shorten to about 6 months.
2) The water pump seal must be replaced every 100,000km. Both my Sentra developed leakage and to the unsuspecting drivers like my wife, the engine eventually drys out of water coolant and will overheat. Unless detected, the pistons will be jammed and the aluminium cylinder head may crack - and you are fcuked!
3) The top radiator cover is made of plastic and will develop hair-line crack over time. You will loose water pressure and your engine will constantly run at high temperature.
4) The crank case cover is also made of plastic (Black in Colour). Over time, the screws will loosen and may cause oil leakage. Once a year, simply tightened the screws.
5) Oil leakage is another problem I encountered due to worn seals. The first is the drive pulley seal and the second is the distributor mounted on the block. To avoid oil leakage that will mess up your engine block have these seals replaced.
Well at least you know now what to look out for to avoid bigger problems from developing. Other than that theGA16DE is a fairly reliable and quiet engine. Remember the Genting Taxis B13 are all powered by similar engines, so it has undergone vigorous test and are proven under those challenging conditions. The good thing about GA16DE is the timing chain which is very durable. My manual Sentra has done more than 230,000km still with stock timing chain!
